Why chasing your goals alone keeps you stuck

Most people pursue what they want through sheer willpower — working harder, wanting more, pushing further. But this approach ignores a fundamental law that the wisest traditions have always known.

The more tightly you grip your own goals, the more they seem to slip away.

You work harder, but results plateau

Effort alone doesn't create lasting success. Without understanding the deeper causes, you're running on a treadmill.

The same patterns keep repeating

Financial stress, strained relationships, health issues — the outer circumstances change but the underlying struggle continues.

Something feels like it's missing

Even when things go well, there's a nagging sense that the conventional path isn't showing you the full picture.

Helping others feels like a trade-off

You've been taught that generosity comes at a cost to yourself. ACI's ancient framework shows why the opposite is true.

You give but rarely receive

Generosity feels one-sided and draining. Without understanding how giving actually works, it depletes instead of returns.

Success in one area costs another

More money means less time. Career growth strains health or family. The gains never feel like they add up to a whole.

Wisdom forged in both worlds

Geshe Michael Roach is uniquely positioned at the intersection of ancient monastic scholarship and modern business reality. He didn't learn these teachings in a retreat — he tested them building a company from the ground up in Manhattan.

His 20-year immersion in Tibetan Buddhist studies at Sera Mey Monastery, combined with a Princeton education and hands-on entrepreneurial experience, gives ACI's curriculum something rare: a framework that is both rigorously authentic and immediately practical.

In 1993, he founded the Asian Classics Institute to make these teachings available to anyone, in English, at no cost. The courses have since reached students in dozens of countries.

"The ancient masters were not philosophers removed from life. They were surgeons of cause and effect — and their instructions work."

Frequently asked questions

No. ACI courses teach the logic and mechanics of ancient Buddhist philosophy as a system of understanding cause and effect — the same way you might study Stoicism or Aristotelian ethics without converting to any faith. Students at ACI include Christians, Jews, atheists, agnostics, and practitioners of other traditions. You are never asked to adopt any belief — only to test the ideas against your own experience.
The framework is designed for people with full lives. The core practices — the daily meditation and the intentional acts of service — can begin with as little as 10–15 minutes a day. The course material is self-paced and available on your schedule. Many students find the principles begin reshaping their thinking naturally, so the "time commitment" begins to feel less like a discipline and more like a lens.
There is no catch. ACI was founded on the principle that these teachings should be as accessible as possible. Geshe Michael Roach made a commitment to offer the core curriculum at no charge, funded by donations from those who have benefited from it. We don't upsell premium tiers or hidden programs. If the teachings help you and you choose to support ACI later, that is welcome — but never required.
Perfect — you're starting with a clean slate. The meditation practices taught at ACI are simple, evidence-grounded, and introduced gradually. You don't need any prior experience, any special equipment, or a specific posture. The goal is a sustainable daily practice, not perfection. Complete beginners are common and welcome.
Most modern self-help programs are built on psychology and motivational theory — tools for managing your inner state. ACI goes further by addressing the causal mechanics of your outer circumstances. The framework doesn't just help you feel better about your situation; it teaches you how to plant the right causes for a different situation. It's grounded in 2,500 years of systematic inquiry, not trend cycles.
